St. John the Beloved Basketball Team Soars Over Muscle Disease Raising $1,000 for Local Muscle Champion
WILMINGTON, DE - The Soaring Eagles of St. John the Beloved joined the Muscle Movement Foundation this past winter, playing with a purpose to end muscle disease. St. John the Beloved's (B)- Basketball Team invited MMF Founder and Saint John the Beloved Alumnus, Rob DeMasi, to their Annual Holiday Tournament. Prior to the athletes warming up, Head Coach Mark Budd gathered his team and families in the upper level of the gymnasium to meet his old teammate and good friend, Rob DeMasi. As Rob explained how his life began to change just one year after graduating from Saint John the Beloved, emotions filled the room. Rob continued to explain the significance of the Muscle Movement Foundation by sharing the story of local 13 yr. old Muscle Champion, Eddie Hazeldine, who recently lost his ability to walk due to duchenne muscular dystrophy. After the MMF message was delivered, Head Coach Mark Budd, coaches, and athletes were more than ready to fulfill their team goal as Tournament Champions!
Fulfilling their team goal is exactly what the Soaring Eagles did. Defeating St. Mary Magdalen in the finals, St. John the Beloved was crowned Tournament Champions! Coach Mark Budd and team united on the court wearing their custom SJB Basketball - Muscle Movement Foundation warmup shirts. As the team was presented their 1st place trophy, the team flexed their muscles in support of the Muscle Movement Foundation and local 13 year old Muscle Champion, Eddie Hazeldine! Accomplishing their team goal on the court, the SJB Eagles would refuse to be defeated off the court. Setting a team goal to raise $1,000 for the MMF this season, the Soaring Eagles were just short of their goal at the end of the tournament. With only a couple games left in the season, Coach Budd, team, and the SJB community united for one final effort to conclude this year as true champions. Raising $800 at the end of the Holiday Tournament, the team ended their season raising a total of $1,220 for local Muscle Champion, Eddie Hazeldine, accomplishing their goal and ending the season as champions; on and off of the court!
